S.C.A.R.E.

Because no child should miss out on the magic & mayhem of Halloween

Starting the second month of the year, we begin to talk about our love for others. Most of the time people speak of the those they are romantically involved with. This year I want to challenge you to look at it with a different perspective. Take a few minutes from your day to have a genuine conversation with a neighbor or say hello to a stranger you walk by on the street. Making new friends is a great way to spread some love. And speaking about love…
Cupid is probably among the most well-known symbols of love as the small child with wings shooting his arrows into the hearts of us mortals. He actually has a story about falling in love with a mortal that he was supposed to punish for being too beautiful but made her his wife instead. However, she broke a promise of not looking at him and he left her. As she struggled to prove her love for him, she fell into an eternal slumber and Cupid took pity on her. Not only did he return to her side, he helped make her a goddess!
A second story from Greek Mythology involves Eros (Cupid) who was more mischievous than his Roman counterpart. Along with his golden arrows of love, he carried a second set of leaden arrows that caused avoidance or dislike. One day for fun, Eros shoots a golden arrow into the heart of Apollo (Greek God of the Sun) so he falls in love with a mortal. Eros proceeds to shoot that mortal with a leaden arrow causing her to despise Apollo. Now Apollo is carrying around unrequited love for someone who can’t stand him. Ouch!
Real friendship is something worth treasuring. This might be the kids we grew up with or people we met at work. It’s a great feeling to know there are people who have your back no matter what. Make it a point to reconnect with some old friends and see how things are going for them. Knowing someone cares can turn a struggle into a win.
Each of us probably wish every story had a happy ending, we know that isn’t the case. Families struggle on a regular basis to make ends meet. The cost of living continues to rise and it’s tough to survive out there. S.C.A.R.E. is about trying to give back in our own way to the community and we really could use some help. It doesn’t have to be some big project or take over your life. There are plenty of little things we need help with and it’s a great group of people to hang out with. Maybe you will even make some new friends.

Costume Sorting: We are continuing to sort out the costumes we have collected so we know what we have in inventory and we can prepare for this upcoming Halloween season. We really could use some extra help. Drinks and snacks will be provided.
Volunteer Fair: The United Way of Nashua is hosting a volunteer fair at the end of March. If you have been wanting to get involved with us or any other charity, you should come check it out. We hope to see you there.
Deconstruction: Now that our winter wonderland has run its course, the next step is to dismantle the building. We are looking for helpers to take it apart as well as potentially getting involved with the design and building the new structure for this years’ haunt.

Fun Little Facts:
For the longest time, it was considered bad luck to sign your valentine card.
In the Middle Ages, Men would pick a scrap of paper with a girl’s name on it and pin it to their sleeve for a week. This is where “wearing your heart on your sleeve” is believed to have originated.
